Access control answers three operational questions: who may enter, where they may go, and when access is allowed. Good design also handles visitors, vendors, deliveries, emergencies, and the exceptions that occur every day.
Core system components
Credentials identify users, readers request entry, controllers apply rules, locks secure openings, and management software records events and permissions.
- Cards, fobs, mobile credentials, PINs, or approved biometrics
- Door, gate, elevator, garage, and amenity controls
- Schedules, groups, anti-passback, and temporary permissions
- Audit logs, alerts, and integrations with video or intercoms
Design around user journeys
Map residents or tenants, staff, visitors, delivery drivers, cleaners, contractors, and emergency personnel. Each group needs an intentional enrollment, entry, exception, and removal process.
Policies make technology effective
Define credential ownership, replacement, sharing, privacy, visitor approval, after-hours access, door-prop response, records access, and periodic reviews before configuration begins.
- Remove access promptly after move-out or termination
- Give vendors time-bound, location-limited permissions
- Test emergency egress and fail-safe or fail-secure behavior
- Review repeated denials, forced doors, and unusual schedules
